If you’ve been seeking funding for an existing or new for-profit business, you might find that it is more difficult in finding and obtaining grant funding.

Government grants are generally (though not necessarily always) given to non-profit organizations for programs and services that will benefit the community or the public as a group.

The first place that you should look for government grants is with the U.S. Government's Website.

This site will assist you to be able to electronically find and apply for the various different grant opportunities from all Federal grant-making agencies.


You will also be able to look for information on the different kinds of grants and the government agencies that issue grants.

Further, you can sign up in order to receive instant notification of future grant opportunities that you might find in your inbox.

You can also take a look at the Government's Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA), which hosts a very complete listing of various Government grants as well as other types of help which might be available.

This guide is where you can obtain information on grants by Category and Topic Area or you can search the Catalog by key words etc. if you find it easier in that way.

If you find a specific grant that might interest you, then try to make sure that you carefully read the section on Eligibility Requirements in order to find out if you would be qualified to apply for that specific grant.

You should also bear in mind that most government grants are not available throughout the year.

This implies that you cannot apply for most of them at any time that you feel like it, you can apply for them only when they are announced by a Government agency.

When an agency makes their money available for a grant, it will usually put an announcement in the Federal Register which is published every week day.

Grants which are offered to individuals are generally given to them for educational support (financial aid), for artistic purposes, and various other types of research, although some agencies will give away grants to individuals for other purposes as well.

You must of course know that getting a grant is very hard work.

You shouldn’t ever be fooled by advertisements and promotions that state that you can get free cash just by writing a letter.

There is a lot of competition out there for grant funds.

If you want to be successful in obtaining a grant, you must then provide the funding agency with a very good proposal that explains your objectives and also offers a plan and a detailed budget plan for your activities.

Grants are only free in that you don’t have to pay the money back.

Nevertheless, if you are given a grant you might be required to provide some progress reports, program evaluation, and/or financial reports to the government agency that will issue the grant.
